The Mets' pitching depth is getting a much-needed boost, but will Christian Scott be ready to deliver when it counts?
It's a welcome sight for New York Mets fans: starting pitcher Christian Scott is back on the mound, actively participating in live batting practices and inching closer to game action. He's expressing a strong sense of optimism, stating, "I’m feeling great." Scott shared his excitement from the Mets' spring-training facilities in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with SNY, emphasizing, "Excited to be back, get off the mound in front of these guys again. It’s nice to come and pitch healthy and do what I do, do what I love. I’m excited for this year."
Scott, a 26-year-old right-hander, faced a significant setback just nine starts into his MLB career two years ago when a sprained UCL led to Tommy John surgery. This injury sidelined him for the entirety of the 2025 season, and his absence was keenly felt by a starting rotation that struggled considerably in the latter half of that campaign.
He's been steadily progressing, with his most recent bullpen session on Sunday marking his sixth time facing hitters. The plan is for him to likely begin the 2026 season in Triple-A as he continues to build up his arm strength and stamina for a full workload. However, he could be called upon to contribute to the major league club if any of the current rotation members, such as Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, or David Peterson, experience difficulties.
Scott also highlighted the positive team atmosphere, noting, "We’re excited. Everyone’s gotten here pretty early. A lot of these guys are great guys. We work out together, do all of our stuff together. It’s cool to be able to build off each other."
During his debut season two years ago, Scott showcased flashes of potential, posting a 4.56 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 47.1 innings. He demonstrated the ability to be a solid middle-of-the-rotation option, pitching six or more innings on three occasions and limiting opponents to three runs or fewer in each of those starts. Notably, he achieved a career-high of eight strikeouts against the Atlanta Braves on May 11 of that year.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Scott's return is undoubtedly positive, the Mets' rotation has been a revolving door. Is relying on a pitcher returning from Tommy John surgery, even with his past flashes of brilliance, a sign of strategic depth or a desperate gamble? His past performance, while promising, wasn't exactly Cy Young material. Will he be able to recapture that form, or will the pressure of a struggling rotation lead to further setbacks?
