The BYD Sealion 5 is a remarkable mid-sized SUV that offers a blend of comfort, decent driving experience, and impressive fuel efficiency, delivering up to 45mpg. This Chinese automotive giant is making rapid strides, introducing more models than Ford and Vauxhall combined in a short span of time. With the Sealion 5 being the tenth model in their lineup, BYD is set to expand further with the addition of a little hatchback in the coming months. The Sealion 5 comes in two variants: pure electric models like the Dolphin and Dolphin Surf, and petrol/electric plug-in hybrids such as the Seal U and Seal 6 Touring. The petrol/electric combo is a practical choice for those who want to maximize electric power during the week and still have the flexibility of a fuel tank for longer trips. During our test drive, we found the Sealion 5 to be a decent performer with better body control than the Seal U, making it easy to handle on the road. The hybrid system allows for an average of 45mpg, while the EV mode enables you to travel 50-odd miles on errands without using the petrol engine. However, some driver-assistance features were found to be too sensitive, and a simple solution was found by covering the over-enthusiastic driver monitoring camera with a sticky label. The central touchscreen, unfortunately, does not rotate to an upright position, but it still packs a lot of technology, including a unique three-finger swipe to adjust heating controls. The Sealion 5 provides ample space and comfort for all passengers, with enough room for gangly teens in the back. The price starts at £29,995 for the Seal 5 Comfort, which is cheaper than a regular petrol car. The top-spec Design model, priced at £32,995, includes additional features like a 360-degree camera, heated seats, wireless phone charger, and a larger 18kWh battery in the floor. BYD has assembled an impressive lineup of cars, including saloons, SUVs, crossovers, and estates, in just three years in the UK market, and was recently crowned Autotrader's 'best-loved brand'. Looking ahead, BYD is set to introduce the Dolphin G, a Renault Clio-sized supermini with plug-in hybrid technology, which is expected to be priced around £23k-£24k. This model is poised to be a hit, offering both fun and efficiency. But here's where it gets controversial... The Sealion 5's impressive features and competitive pricing may challenge established brands, sparking debates about the future of the automotive industry. And this is the part most people miss... The rapid expansion of BYD and its innovative models could potentially disrupt the market, leaving some established brands struggling to keep up. So, what do you think? Will BYD's rapid progress and innovative models challenge the status quo, or will they eventually fade into the background? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
