Prepare for a wave of emotions as Jonathan Toews gears up for an unforgettable return to Chicago! Known affectionately as “Captain Serious,” Toews is about to step onto the ice at the United Center for the first time since his storied career with the Blackhawks came to a pause.
“It’s definitely a unique situation,” Toews reflected after Monday’s morning skate. “Ultimately, you aim to perform well and secure a victory, so maintaining focus is crucial amidst the whirlwind of feelings surrounding this event. However, I can’t deny that I’m looking forward to tonight—I’m filled with energy and eager to give my best performance.”
The Winnipeg Jets are set to face off against the Blackhawks on Monday evening, marking their second encounter this season; the first match-up on October 30 ended with a decisive 6-3 win for the Jets in Winnipeg. In a fitting tribute, the Blackhawks will be honoring Toews with a special video presentation early in the first period.
Tune in to witness Toews competing against his former teammates as the Jets clash with the Blackhawks at 7:30 PM CT on TSN3.
Reflecting on his last game in Chicago, Toews recalled, "I think many of you remember that unexpected standing ovation I received. It truly took me by surprise." He added, "Tonight, I anticipate experiencing similar emotions. I’m not entirely certain how to respond, but it feels wonderful to return, reconnect with old friends, and feel that warm welcome once more."
Toews’ influence on the Blackhawks organization and the city of Chicago’s hockey culture is nothing short of monumental. As a three-time Stanley Cup champion and former captain, he became synonymous with the franchise.
Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey shared his admiration, saying, "Growing up, I watched countless games featuring the Hawks along with Toews and all the incredible players during their championship runs. For me, the memories are plentiful, and I can only imagine what it must feel like for him, having led that team and celebrating three championships. Tonight will undoubtedly be special."
Over his illustrious career, Toews has played 1,067 games for the Blackhawks, scoring 372 goals and providing 511 assists for a remarkable total of 883 points. He earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010 and the Selke Trophy in 2013, further solidifying his legacy. After a prolonged absence from the ice due to health issues, this 37-year-old player is now making his mark within the Jets organization.
Forward Cole Perfetti expressed his appreciation for Toews, stating, "He has been incredibly beneficial for me. Sometimes I tend to ruminate over past mistakes, but Toews is exceptional at moving on to the next shift or next game. His mindset is starting to influence how I approach things as well."
Toews acknowledged that he has been quite hard on himself throughout his career, a trait he’s actively working to improve. Perfetti noted, "When you’re on the ice and don’t feel satisfied with your last shift or make a mistake, it’s vital to let it go and focus on what comes next. Toews excels at this, and it’s been a great learning experience for me."
This season, Toews has had to apply his own advice as he faced uncertainties about returning to the NHL and performing at a level he holds himself to. After a few months of finding his rhythm, he’s noticeably elevated his game since the holiday break. In the 12 games following that period, Toews has netted four goals and contributed five assists. Additionally, he currently ranks second in the league with a faceoff win percentage of 62.4%.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel praised Toews, saying, "He’s clearly found his stride, and reaching 900 career points is an incredible milestone. It’s fantastic to see him excelling, and we hope he maintains this momentum through the remainder of the season. It took him some time to regain his footing, but now we’re witnessing the rewards of his persistence."
Toews reached the notable milestone of 900 career points during a recent victory, adding another accolade to his already impressive career. However, what truly resonates with players across the league is his remarkable resilience and determination to return to the game after overcoming significant challenges.
John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs commented on Toews’ journey, stating, "His strength and desire to make a comeback, especially after facing health and personal hurdles, speaks volumes about his character. It’s a key reason behind his success in both the NHL and internationally. He commands immense respect. Having played alongside him internationally, I can attest that he consistently brings his best game, which is always a challenge for opponents.
"His skills in the faceoff circle and competitive spirit are remarkable—qualities that highlight why the league is exciting, as we get to compete against top-tier players like him."
Nonetheless, as meaningful as this matchup is for Toews, the reality for the Jets remains that they are seven points away from a wild-card position. Securing those two crucial points will be instrumental, even if the game carries extra significance against the Blackhawks.
Morrissey added, "As teammates, we’re genuinely thrilled for him. Regardless of our standings, we want to secure the win for him, too. He’s a legend in Chicago, having captained three Stanley Cup-winning teams and performed at such a high level. It wouldn’t be surprising to see his number hanging in the rafters one day."
