Bold claim: MLB is upgrading its Spring Breakout from light exhibition to a serious, high-stakes tournament. And this is the part most people miss: the change aims to spotlight top prospects in real competition, not just showcase moments.
MLB announced that starting in 2027, the Spring Breakout showcase will become the Spring Breakout Tournament. It will be a single-elimination format held in late March during the spring training period for 2027 and 2028. Teams will consist of top prospects from each club across the Cactus League and Grapefruit League, competing head-to-head until a champion is crowned for each league.
The format shift is being implemented a year early to avoid clashing with this year’s World Baseball Classic.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred lauded the event’s track record, noting that Spring Breakout has already provided fans with a preview of the sport’s rising stars. “It’s given our fans a glimpse of the exciting talent flowing into our game. With more meaningful games, the Spring Breakout Tournament will elevate this event and deliver a unique experience for fans ahead of opening day.”
Before the 2027 tournament kicks off, the 2026 Spring Breakout will run March 19–22, featuring 16 games that showcase baseball’s best prospects.
Expected participants include Pirates infielders Konnor Griffin and Kevin McGonigle, outfielder Max Clark; Athletics infielder Leo De Vries; Brewers infielder Jesús Made; and Cardinals infielder J.J. Wetherholt, among others.
Historically, Spring Breakout has served as a pipeline to the majors. Notably, three of the last four Rookie of the Year winners played in Spring Breakout: Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes, Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz, and Braves catcher Drake Baldwin. Across the first two editions, 210 players ultimately reached the major leagues.
Other prominent alumni include 2025 All-Stars James Wood (Nationals), Junior Caminero (Rays), and Jacob Misiorowski (Brewers) with teammate Jackson Chourio; Blue Jays postseason standout Trey Yesavage; Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony; Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday; and Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn.
Spring Breakout 2026 rosters will be announced at noon on March 5 on MLB Network.
All 16 games will be streamed live and free on MLB.TV, MLB.com, and the MLB App, with MLB Network airing eight games live. Eleven games will be standalone contests at major league spring training venues, while five will appear as part of doubleheaders alongside other spring training games.
The 2026 schedule opens March 19 with five games, including Reds vs. Giants at Scottsdale Stadium and Rays vs. Mets at Clover Park in St. Lucie, Florida. The tournament concludes March 22 with Brewers vs. Athletics at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona, featuring Guardians prospects facing Angels farmhands at 4:10 p.m. local time on March 19 at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
