The ultimate game of deception on The Traitors UK has concluded, and one woman from Newry has emerged victorious, proving that a childhood spent playing 'Mafia' was the ultimate training ground!
Rachel Duffy, a Newry resident, has achieved an incredible feat, lasting a remarkable 12 episodes and becoming the sole female traitor to triumph in the hit BBC series, walking away with a staggering £47,875. Her journey was a masterclass in maintaining a poker face, even when facing intense scrutiny from fellow contestants.
"When it comes to a game... the competitive side comes out," Rachel shared with BBC News NI, revealing the strategic mindset that fueled her success. Her ability to deceive and outwit was amplified by her alliance with fellow traitor and winner, Stephen. "From the minute he dropped his hood… I thought aw he's lovely, really nice person. I felt relaxed," Rachel confessed about her initial impression of Stephen, an impression that proved to be a cornerstone of their successful partnership.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the finale left viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering if either traitor would succumb to greed and betray the other for the full £97,750 prize, Rachel and Stephen chose loyalty. They upheld a promise to never vote for each other at the round table, a decision that, for many, restored faith in humanity. "As we made our promise, I just fell in love with him in the castle. We have a really nice friendship," Rachel reminisced, highlighting the genuine bond that formed amidst the deception.
So, what was Rachel's secret weapon? Apparently, it was years of playing Mafia, a game where players are divided into groups, with one designated as 'killers' who operate during a 'night-phase,' and the others who must deduce and eliminate players during a 'day-phase.' "I played Mafia growing up... I played that for 15 years. I became very good at any game where I had to play a straight face," she explained. This extensive practice undoubtedly honed her ability to remain composed under pressure.
And this is the part most people miss... While Rachel's victory was a triumph, she admitted that the constant deception took its toll. "I can see watching the episodes… the bags under my eyes getting a little heavier," she noted. The mental and emotional energy required to maintain the traitor persona was exhausting, especially when it meant lying to people she genuinely liked and enduring sleepless nights in the castle's turret. "You're lying to people you like…staying up late in the turret... we had less sleep than anyone else."
The homecoming: Rachel's family, who had been anxiously following her progress, were overjoyed at her win. She described watching a video of their reaction as incredibly emotional. Keeping the secret of her success for months was a challenge, with her brother repeatedly trying to pry information from her. "None of the cast knew the ending. None of my family knew the ending," she confirmed.
Upon waking after the finale, Rachel felt an immense sense of relief. "A sense of relief, it's been so many secrets. Forget the lies, it's the secrets, holding on to that... I feel lighter, I feel I've no secrets. No more lies!" she exclaimed. She humorously acknowledged the irony of her situation: "I've to go home now and tell my children by the way its not nice to lie."
What's next for Rachel? The prize money is earmarked for her family, particularly her mother who is living with Parkinson's Disease and dementia. "I rang my mummy this morning… I can't wait to come home and give her a big hug and say what will we do? Anything you want lets go do it.. so yeah as long as I get to spoil my family that's all I care about." Before embarking on any grand plans, however, Rachel's immediate priority is rest. "Sleep. I'm gonna put my feet up and relax… January has been crazy… I just want to get home. In February we can think about what we want to do with the money."
