UFC Fight Night 268: A New Challenger Arises!
In a swift turn of events, Brandon Moreno, the former two-time flyweight champion, has a new opponent lined up for the main event at UFC Fight Night 268. But here's where it gets controversial... Moreno's original opponent, Asu Almabayev, had to withdraw due to an injury, and now Moreno faces a different challenge altogether.
On February 28th, at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Moreno (23-9-2 MMA, 11-6-2 UFC) will square off against Lone'er Kavanagh (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a highly anticipated bout. The UFC made the announcement on Wednesday, following initial reports from BJPenn.com.
Moreno, who was originally scheduled to face the No. 7-ranked flyweight contender Almabayev, now finds himself up against Kavanagh, who holds the No. 15 spot in the promotion's rankings. Kavanagh was initially set to fight Bruno Silva, but Silva will now face Charles Johnson.
And this is the part most people miss... Moreno is looking to bounce back from a controversial second-round stoppage at the hands of Tatsuro Taira at UFC 323. Kavanagh, on the other hand, earned his UFC contract with a first-round knockout on Dana White's Contender Series in 2024. He went on to win his first two UFC bouts by decision but suffered a setback in his last fight, getting stopped by Johnson.
The updated UFC Fight Night 268 lineup is as follows:
- Brandon Moreno vs. Lone'er Kavanagh
- Macy Chiasson vs. Ailin Perez
- Damian Pinas vs. Wesley Schultz
- Ryan Gandra vs. Jose Medina
- Felipe Bunes vs. Edgar Chairez
- Kevin Borjas vs. Imanol Rodriguez
- David Martinez vs. Marlon Vera
- Francis Marshall vs. Erik Silva
- Santiago Luna vs. Angel Pacheco
- Kris Moutinho vs. Cristian Quinonez
- Ernesta Kareckaite vs. Sofia Montenegro
